Pain, Sorrow, and Happiness Epilogue Part 1

Heero had finished packing and closed hit suitcase. He picked it up off of the bed and walked over to the door stopping to grab Relena's on his way out. He had passed by the room that they decided would be the nursery for their first child to see that Relena was standing in the middle of the room.

"Relena. Are you ready?"

She nodded at him and he made his way down the steps and stop at the front door to wait for her. A short time later she came down the steps smiling at him. Heero opened the door and Relena stepped out of their home. He closed and locked the door behind him and together they walked over to the truck. Heero watched Relena stop by the passenger side door. He quickly threw their luggage in the back and opened the door for her. Once she sat down and buckled up he closed the door and walked over to the drivers side and got in.

"We really need to get a car Heero. We're not going to have enough room in here for three of us."

He looked over at her and smirked while starting the truck. He had planned on getting her a car of her own when they got back so she could get to town for her doctors appointments and other stuff that she may want to do.

"I planned on buying one soon for you to drive."

Relena looked at him totally shocked.

"Really, my own car? I just learned how to drive and you're going to get me my own car?"

Heero nodded and just pulled out of their gravel driveway when he felt Relena hit him on the arm.

"I thought that you would have had your seatbelt fixed by now."

"I'll get it done when we get back."

"You better." She crossed her arms and tried to imitate his old death glare, causing him to laugh at her.

He thought that it was extremely funny whenever she tried to do that. The way that her nose wrinkled up always made him smile.

They drove in silence a short distance before she spoke again. "I can't believe that Millardo and Lucrezia are finally getting married. I felt like this day was really never going to happen. Those two have been in love with each other for years. I'm surprised that it took them this long."

"Your brother has a hot head, I think Noin just wanted to cool him off a bit."

He heard Relena giggle. "I'm just glad that the two of you get along."

"It helps that we haven't seen each other in three years." Heero smirked and looked over at her. He was glad the Zechs did what he did. If it weren't for him then they would probably still would be apart.

"Heero, I've been thinking that maybe we can exchange our vows again, but this time invite everyone. I'm sure that they're still mad that we eloped and didn't invite them."

"I think that we can arrange something like that." She smiled at him and closed her eyes. After a few short moments he placed his hand on her stomach and smiled. His child was growing there. The thought of that still mystified him. He let his hand rest there a few more moments then pulled it back placing it on the steering wheel again.

He looked back over at her again to see that she was sleeping.  He couldn't help but smile when he seen the warm smile cross her face, and it made him wonder what she was dreaming about.

His life with her has been nothing but perfect the past three years. And despite what she thought would happen if she left the whole political arena, everyone had understood. She was a young woman who needed time to her self.

He looked up at the sky. It looked like it would start to rain at any minute. There were a few drops of water that smacked the windshield. Heero turned on the wipers. He looked back at the road to see the headlights of an oncoming car.  It was the first vehicle that he seen that morning. The sky seemed to open up and a sudden downpour made his view blurry. The other vehicle suddenly veered into his lane.

"Shit!"

He had no time to react. He quickly slammed on the breaks hoping for a miracle then felt the impact as the two vehicles collided. Their tuck spun and slid down a small embankment before slamming into a tree.

Heero glanced over at Relena to see that blood was slowly dripping on her clothes. He quickly stumbled out of the truck and slip a few times on the loose ground as he ran to get her out. He stopped at the door and pulled to get it open and quickly moved to her side and looked her over. Her hair was matted with blood and ran down the right side of her face. Heero knew that she had sustained a head injury he just didn't know how bad it might be.

"Relena talk to me!"

He moved quickly, but carefully, and picked her up out of the truck. He walked a short distance then collapsed on the ground cradling her in his arms.

"Relena.....Relena open you eyes."

He felt relived when she opened her eyes slightly. He couldn't help but smile as she raised her hand and placed it his cheek. Her hand was trembling, from the chill of the rain. He watched as she closed her eyes and a small smile crossed her face then her hand fell back to rest where it once laid.

"Relena open you eyes, you have got to say awake. Relena!"

He could hear someone coming down the embankment he looked up to see a man approaching him. The guy was holding one of his arms against his chest. Heero could tell that it was broken.

"Are you ok? I called for a ambulance." The man asked once he got close to them.

"Get away." Heero growled at him.

"I didn't see you once the rain started to come down, I couldn't see anything. Is she ok?"

"What does it look like to you?" Heero snapped at him.

The man reached his hand out to check her pulse.

"Don't touch her!"  Heero smack his hand away.

The man was shocked by Heero's actions. "I...I'm a doctor. Let me help."

"You did this! I don't want your hands on her!" He could feel himself start to loose control and he wanted to strangle the man to death.

The man back up the embankment slipping a few times. "I'm going to wait for the ambulance up here."

Heero looked back down at Relena and pulled her closer against his body when he felt her shiver. "Hold on Relena.... Donít leave me."

It seemed like an eternity before the sounds of the ambulance could be herd. Heero held Relena closely trying to shield her from the rain and to keep her warm. He glanced up at the road to see the man that he talked to earlier standing near at the top of the embankment watching them. The man looked down the road when he heard the ambulance coming and walked toward it. Heero could hear the man yelling at the paramedics as they quickly made their way over to where Heero and Relena were.

"Sir you need to let go of her so we can take a look."

Heero just stared at them.

One of the medics placed a hand on his shoulder. "Sir please let us do our job."

Heero handed her over to them and watched as the checked over her injuries and prepared to carry her up the embankment. "She's pregnant." One of the paramedics nodded and continued his work. He followed their movements like a hawk. If any of them did anything to jeopardize her safety then he would kill them there on the spot. He followed the medics up the embankment. Once he was back on the road he looked over at the man that was driving the other vehicle. He was standing near his truck looking at the damage. Heero was busy keeping himself under control so he wouldn't go at the man.

"Excuse me sir. I think that you should have that gash on your head looked at"

Heero looked at the medic that was standing next to him and offered him a look that could have killed the man of fright. The guy quickly took off not wanting to get anymore on Heero's bad side. He looked over at the ambulance to see that they were just about to place Relena on it. He hurried over to the ambulance.

"I'm her husband I'm coming." He got on and sat down next to her and took her hand in his.

"Has she been unconscious the whole time?" Asked the medic that sat down next to him.

Heero shook his head. "No she was awake once but passed back out."

"How far along in the pregnancy is she?"

"Four months." Heero turned his attention back to Relena as the medic radioed in the information.

'Hold on Relena you need to hold on.'

After arriving at the hospital Heero paced the waiting area where a nurse had ushered him. He had called Noin and Zechs letting her know what had happened and was told that they would be on their way their. Almost an hour had passed before a doctor finally came into the room to talk to him. He had been told that Relena had some swelling of the brain but it was slowly starting to subside and that she was in the ICU.

"I need to be with her." Heero demanded.

"Once she has stabilized we will come and get you. In the mean time you may want to get your injuries looked at."

"That's not good enough." Heero growled at him.

"Sir please she needs her rest so she can recover quickly the baby is making her body exhausted. And besides if you don't get your injuries treated I won't let you in to see her."

Heero was ready to snap the mans neck. He felt someone touch his arm and he looked over to see a nurse smiling.

"Come with me, we'll get those scratches cleaned up real quick."

Heero looked back at Relena's doctor to see that the man was already walking down the hallway. He then turned and followed the nurse.

After his injuries were cleaned they managed to stitch up the gash on his head and the deep cut on his lip. He never would have paid his injuries any attention if it weren't for him not being able to see Relena. The nurse that fixed him up took him to Relena's room.

Heero slowly walked toward her bed. He hated this, why did things like this happen to them? Haven't they already gone through enough? He pulled a chair over to the bed and sat down next to her. Looking at her like this made his heart ache. Why did it have to be Relena that got hurt? Why couldn't it have been him? He's survived through so much worse than a car wreck and he would gladly take her place to take away any pain that she may be in.

Heero took her hand in his. "Relena, you can fight this. Your such a strong woman." He placed his other hand on her stomach. "We worked so hard to have a family together and I'm not going to loose either one of you."

He looked up as he heard the door open and glared at her doctor as he walked in.

"Good you here. I want to talk to you about a few things." The doctor pulled out Relena chart and opened it.

"Why hasn't she woken up?" Heero returned his gaze to Relena to keep himself calm.

"She's in a coma, but since you said that she was in and out of consciousness earlier I believe that she will wake up soon."

"How soon?" Heero found himself rubbing her stomach in small circles.

"It can be any minute to any day. I don't think that it will be months like some cases. But I would like to warn you that if she stays under too much longer we would like to have permission to put a tube in her stomach to feed her. The baby is going to take every ounce of energy that she has. And we want to make sure that she and the baby stays healthy."

Heero nodded and stopped moving his hand.

"Are there any questions that I can answer for you?"

"Are there any threats to the baby?"

The Dr. shook his head. "None that have me worried. Is there anything else?"

Heero shook his head.

"Ok then, I'll have a nurse stop by and get what you need so you can stay with your wife."

Heero listened to the footsteps of the doctor then the sound of the door swinging shut as he left. Heero laid his head down gently on her stomach. He looked her pale features and held her hand gently, but firmly. And he whispered. "I need you Relena, there's no way that I can't have you in my life."
